Dr. Gunnels or “Dr. G” as the kids call him, grew up in Mobile, Alabama. He studied Pre-Professional Biology at the University of West Florida, where he also competed on the men’s tennis team. Dr. Gunnels attended the University of Alabama at Birmingham to complete his formal dental training. While serving in Guatemala on a mission trip, his attention shifted to wanting to treat children. Following dental school, Dr. Gunnels completed specialty training at Baylor in Dallas, TX. While there, he spent two years focused on treating pediatric patients and children with special needs. Following the completion of his specialty training, Dr. Gunnels completed two additional examinations to become a Board-Certified Pediatric Dentist. 

From there, Dr. Gunnels and his wife Kristen moved to Denver, Colorado, to work for a pediatric dental office. During their two years in Colorado, they enjoyed everything from skiing, climbing 14ers, and camping. While Dr. Gunnels and his family enjoyed their time in Colorado, they felt a pull to move back to Alabama and start Summit Smiles Pediatric Dentistry. In his spare time, Dr. Gunnels enjoys spending time with his lovely wife, Kristen, and their golden retriever named Beau! He enjoys playing tennis and attempts to play golf! He can’t wait to meet you and your family!
